Seven radio operators ranged in age from 13 to 16 years old
MARQUETTE -- Behind the scenes at the YMCA Fun Run/Walk were school-aged kids keeping communication open over HAM radios.
The seven radio operators ranged in age from 13 to 16 years old, and most just received their licenses.
Each operator kept an eye on aid stations during the event in case they needed to radio for medical assistance for a runner.
"It's really a good feeling knowing that you can help people. Sometimes you're the only way of getting back to help, and it's really important. It's what HAM radio is all about: providing emergency services and stuff," said HAM radio operator, Josh Johnson.
They also relayed information to headquarters, like how many runners were still out on the course.
