Fire UP Conference focuses on missions

MARQUETTE -- Reflecting on how to give to others, inspiring faith with other kids their own age, and bringing in multi-church denominations to worship God together.

It's all part of the annual Fire UP Conference, that drew in almost 1,000 people from across the Upper Peninsula, northern lower Peninsula, and northern Wisconsin, to Lakeview Arena this weekend.

This year was the second time an adult conference was held, of which 100 people attended.  And the theme was missions.

"Learning about missions and how they can get involved in their neighborhood, nationwide and worldwide," said Director Jill Seppala.

Speakers encouraged youth and adults to reach out in their communities and perhaps further.

"It really struck, stuck with me," said Naubinway teen, Kayla Miller.  "I am blessed.  I have so much more than I need.  It makes me want to get out and do some things for other people."

And bands like Only 9 a.m. from Gaylord, Michigan, or other national groups like Eowyn, or Mike's Chair, brought the message of love in their music.

"I think it's really good for our community and communities around the U.S.," said Iron River teen, Ryan McGeshick.

Organizers say they had hoped the adult conference would be more popular.  But because of low attendance, they think they'll only hold the teen version of Fire UP next year.
