Named best mountain in the Midwest
LAC LA BELLE -- They come by the bus load, eager to hit all of the black-diamond trails that sprawl out from Bohemia's 900-foot peak.
The extreme skiers and riders that frequent the mountain know exactly why it was recently named best in the Midwest.
"It’s got long runs, fluff and trees; it's a great hill," said skier Janet Larson.
"It’s the greatest ski hill on the face of the Earth as far as I’m concerned," said John Haataja.
2010 has been Bohemia's best season yet; of course they've had good luck with weather. Just over 100 inches of snow has fallen since the season started in mid-December and they've already opened 70 of their 75 runs.
"Our numbers are up 15 percent,” said operations supervisor Jeff McMahon. “We've sold over 3,000 season passes, which is 300 more than last year."
Bohemia’s endless supply of fresh powder and ever-expanding terrain are a big part of its popularity. But many also come for its charm.
"It’s got a cool culture, local vibe, it's fun," said skier Trent Johnson.
"It’s more about the soul of skiing here,” McMahon said. “You go to a resort out West and it has all the big day spas and stuff like that. It's about skiing here."
In addition to its daily hours, Mount Bohemia has a few special events planned including the Tele-fest weekend in February and Mardi Gras Madness in March.
