IRON COUNTY -- What appeared to be good ice conditions, leads to a vehicle falling into an Iron County lake.

According to the Iron County Sheriff's Department, it happened Tuesday afternoon on Sunset Lake in Bates Township.

The truck owner, Michael Franzene, had checked the ice and found three inches of slush on top of seven inches of what appeared to be good ice.

He used his pickup to haul his ice fishing shack out onto the lake and after doing some fishing, tried to return to shore.

That's when his truck went through the slush and became stuck.  While trying to free it, the ice cracked, and his pickup sank into about 20 feet of water.

Franzene is okay and is making arrangements to get his vehicle back to dry land.

Authorities say that this year, the ice conditions are variable and that anyone venturing out should use extreme caution.
