LANSING (AP) -- Sexually oriented businesses in Michigan would face tighter restrictions on their onsite advertising signs under terms of legislation that has passed the state Senate.

The bill, passed unanimously Tuesday, would prevent adult businesses from using sexually explicit or suggestive images on signs that are visible from the outside.  Businesses would be limited to signs that display only words or numbers, which also would have restrictions.

The bill now goes to the Michigan House.

The restrictions would take effect in 2011 if the bill becomes part of Michigan law.

Violations would cost businesses at least $5,000 a day in fines.
