Sawyer International is celebrating a decade of success.
SAWYER -- It's been 10 years since Sawyer International Airport relocated from Negaunee Township to the former air force base and since moving, the airport has seen a 30 percent increase in passenger traffic.
It has also brought in jobs--429 full-time positions are directly related to the airport.
For officials, there is a lot to celebrate, especially looking backing at the past decade from converting the air force base into a viable commercial airport.
"We were obviously disappointed when the air force base closed, but everybody pulled together--at the local, state, and federal level--to make sure we could turn the problem into a great success," said Senator Carl Levin.
After Sawyer International opened its doors, the surrounding area is home to now more than 65 businesses carrying 1,100 jobs.
