NEGAUNEE -- On the waters of Teal Lake, community and college rowing teams competed in the fourth annual Iron Oars Regatta.

Members of the adult and youth Upper Peninsula Community Rowing Club, along with NMU and Michigan Tech, competed in both eight-person and four-person sweep rowing events.

There was also races for one and two-man teams.

For the UPCRC, the Iron Oars Regatta competition gives them a goal to focus on during the year, but Sunday's competition is not the end of their season.

"We leave our boats out till we really can't stand it anymore," said UPCRC member Gail Brayden.  "One year, at the end of the season, we actually ran into a hail storm while we were out, so we try to avoid that."

The UPCRC usually concludes their season in mid to late October, and they're competing in one more regatta next weekend in Houghton.
