UPPER PENINSULA -- You could hear some cheering...and grumbling...from nursing home operators across the Upper Peninsula Thursday.

That's because the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services released its ratings of nursing homes nationwide.  Thirty-two facilties were listed in the U.P.

Seven of them were awarded five stars--the highest rating--and two were given only one star--the lowest rating.

The ratings are based on state inspections, staffing levels, and quality measures, such as how many residents come down with pressure scores.

Although many advocates for the elderly applaud the rating system, critics say the ratings can sometimes be too subjective and rely too much on self-reporting.  Federal officials say the rankings should put the nursing homes on a path to improvement because they know family members will think twice before sending someone to a one-star home.
