MARQUETTE -- Upper Michigan residents will change their clocks this weekend, and local fire departments suggest it's also a good idea to change smoke detector batteries.

The batteries in smoke detectors are not guaranteed to last over a year.

So the Marquette Fire Department says it's good practice to change batteries once, if not twice, a year.

"A lot of times smoke detectors have either worn or missing batteries.  The batteries get used for other purposes, so a lot of times we'll find that smoke detectors are not operable.  So if you get in the habit every six months of changing the battery, then you're sure to have a good fresh battery," said Paul Enrietti of the Marquette Fire Department.

It's also a good idea to replace your smoke detector at least once every ten years.
