MARQUETTE -- This Sunday ends daylight savings time and people need to turn their clocks back an hour.

Fire officials say this is the perfect time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors, too.

At the Marquette Fire Department, they call it the "change your clock, change your battery" program.

The Energizer battery company donates 9V batteries to the fire department, and the department in turn hands them out for free to the public.

"Having a working smoke detector in your home definitely saves lives. If you have a fire in your house, it's going to wake you. Most fires happen in the middle of the night. A working smoke detector is going to alert you that something is wrong and then give you time to get out of your house," said MFD Fire Inspector Brian Naze.

Batteries can be picked up most easily between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The Marquette Fire Department also wants to remind residents that the detectors themselves should be changed every 10 years.
