L'ANSE -- Daylight Savings Time ends this Sunday, and fire department officials are encouraging people to change more than their clocks.

Along with setting your clocks back an hour, officials want to remind you to check to see that your smoke detector is working properly.

A good rule of thumb is to take out the old pair of batteries and replace them with new ones, then test it to make sure it works properly.

"It's your only method of getting an early warning when your house is on fire. When that initial smoke goes up to the ceiling, that smoke detector will let you know before your nose, your pets do, or anything like that," said Lt. Derek Dougovito of the L'Anse Fire Department.

Dougovito also recommends having a detector that's also used for carbon monoxide alerts.
