Students from Finlandia University's student PTA Club held a Soup for Sneakers lunch at the Finnish American Heritage Center Saturday.

It's the first time the club hosted a soup for sneakers event, and it's all to raise money to get elementary school kids new tennis shoes.

To get in, people needed to bring a pair of sneakers or purchase a $6 ticket.

Students cooked up four different types of soups:  chicken wild rice, squash, chicken and bacon, and chili. They also baked some tasty desserts.

They've already raised $900 and hope to exceed that amount.

"It is very important for children, as they're growing up, to have a good pair of tennis shoes for support and for walking, and it's very essential just for their development as they are growing up to have a good pair of shoes," said Melissa Wacher, an organizer.

To also help raise money, they had a silent auction raffle.

The sneakers will go to kids from Houghton and Hancock Elementary School.
