MARQUETTE -- Voters this election season will decide changes to the state's tax law.
Proposal 5 asks voters to amend the state constitution to limit the enactment of new taxes by the state government.
The proposal would require two-thirds of the state legislature, or a statewide vote of the people, in order to change the tax law.
Those voting yes say it would ensure taxes are only raised when necessary. Those opposed to it, including the Snyder administration, say Proposal 5 could actually prevent tax cuts.
"The problem with this particular proposal is that it actually prevents future tax cuts," said Lt. Gov. Brian Calley in a video released by the governor's office. "If this constitutional amendment was in place, the Michigan Business Tax would still be in place."
The group Michigan Alliance for Prosperity was behind the ballot initiative.
