MARQUETTE -- The Marquette Police Department is mourning the loss of their first K9 unit after Nero passed away on Wednesday.

The 10-year-old Belgium Shepherd died after a year-long battle with cancer. Nero's handler, Sergeant Marty Munger, was by his side when he died.

Nero joined the Marquette police force nine years ago and retired earlier this year. The police department says that Nero left a lasting legacy.

Two dogs have since joined the department to fill the void left by Nero's departure. The new K9 units, Scud and Frodo, are in service with the Marquette Police Department, and recently tackled TV6's Eric Kane and Jerry Tudor.
