The USOEC is making changes when it comes to the NMU Weightlifting Club
MARQUETTE -- For 13-year-old Jarynn Stewart, lifting is life. She weightlifts with the Northern Michigan University Weightlifting Club.
"I want to keep doing it, and hopefully by the time I'm in college, I'll be able to be in the Olympics," said Jarynn.
Up until recently, only NMU students were able to be on the team, but now head coach Vance Newgard is opening it up to anyone in the community. They're especially looking at younger athletes, like Jarynn, to develop them for the USOEC.
"By the time they get to the collegiate age, they're usually fairly proficient in the movement. So, when they become a freshmen, they are four steps ahead of the normal freshman," said Newgard.
They're also looking to raise money for new equipment, charging each team member $120 a year.
For athletes like Jarynn, she grew up right in Marquette with the USOEC practically in her backyard. With the new club team expansion, she sees this as the perfect opportunity to pursue her passion and eventually make the Olympics.
"I want to keep doing lifting and hopefully do it when I'm in college and go to NMU to do it here. And hopefully try for the Olympics," Jarynn added.
