MARQUETTE -- At the Peter White Public Library Thursday, some youngsters got a chance to bone up on their reading...to dogs. Dog Nights at the library is a program that lets children who are learning to read practice with pooches. The children read to trained therapy dogs who sit patiently. The kids also collect stickers for every book they read; once they have enough, they can pick out a free book.
"A dog just looks like they're attentive the whole time, that you're doing the greatest in the world, and kids just really feel confident reading to an animal. Kids love animals," said Jenifer Kilpela, Youth Services at the Peter White Public Library.
The Peter White Library pet partners are there every Thursday from now until November 8. The dogs are on hand from 6 to 7:30 p.m. They encourage all area youth who want more practice reading, and some canine companionship, to come and participate.
