CALUMET -- The Copper Country's beautiful fall weather did not distract some of Michigan Tech's fraternity brothers from doing some dirty work for a good cause.

Earlier Saturday morning members of Tau Kappa Epsilon escaped the college bubble to help pick up trash around Calumet.

"It's nice coming around [Calumet], we had a few people come up and pick some trash up for us and brought it over to our bags, which is always nice, just being able to get out there and see the other people," said John Hagopian, President of TKE.

The fraternity joined a 170,000 volunteers from across America in community service for National Public Lands Day.

Rangers from the Keweenaw National Historical Park led Saturday's clean up through public property around Calumet High School.

"I think that it's great that we had the fraternity come out," said Tara Laase-McKinney, a ranger for the Keweenaw National Historical Park. "We've had some other groups as well and we really appreciate them coming out and it's great to see all of these different groups getting involved and helping out."

Also lending a helping hand were local Boy Scouts and volunteers from Habitat for Humanity, who helped clean up Agassiz Park and the Industrial Corridor.

National Public Lands Day may only be once a year, but the park hopes the spirit of community service will continue to bring in volunteers.

"We always have room for volunteers here at the visitor center or we have other events they could volunteer for," said Laase-McKinney.
