MARQUETTE -- Bishop Baraga Days is ongoing, and many took a self-guided history tour in Marquette on Saturday.
Bishop Frederic Baraga was the first bishop of the Diocese of Marquette and was known for his missionary work with Native Americans. Tourists traveled to his home, the Bishop Baraga Association archives, and his crypt. Charlotte Houle's great grandfather, Frank Cameron, was a native guide for Bishop Baraga, and her family donated his Chippewa language bible to the archives.
Despite her family history with Bishop Baraga, she had never seen his tomb, so this tour was the perfect opportunity.
"I just heard so much about him all my life," said Charlotte Houle, a Gwinn resident. "I grew up knowing my great grandfather was a guide and stories about it, so it was good to come and see the book and see the crypt, and now I feel good."
