HOUGHTON -- Early Friday morning, huge boulders from Marquette County were dropped off at their new home on the campus of Michigan Tech.
The rocks, which weigh between three and four tons, are a part of a brand new boulder garden on the east wall of Fisher Hall.
Some of the rocks are from the Tilden and Empire mines.
One Tech professor says the boulders aren't just for looks; they're also a reminder for students.
"Thousands of engineers walk past those rocks everyday, and we want to make them think about working in this very important resource area where there's going to be an enormous number of jobs in the future because the demand for all kinds of materials all around the world is increasing," said Bill Rose, research professor at MTU.
Geologists say one of the rocks formed almost two billion years ago when iron deposits dissolved in the ocean, oxidized, and a meteorite impacted the earth in Sudbury.
