MARQUETTE -- The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, or RSVP, of Marquette held a banquet honoring some of its longtime members on Thursday. The group works to partner seniors with organizations that need volunteers to assist with a variety of needs.

Members who have had 5, 10 and 20 years of service were given awards. RSVP's officials spoke about how important these volunteers are.

"I think a lot of the agencies really rely on the volunteers for their efforts, their skills and their experiences, and our volunteers are generally a very reliable group, so it's always nice to place a volunteer in a location in the county," said RSVP Director Amy Mattson.

Last year RSVP's more than 300 volunteers logged 42,000 hours of service in the area. Robert Salvate, Judy Venturato, Jane Cherette and Gloria Saari were all awarded the Presidential Volunteer Service award.

Mattson also said they are always looking for more volunteers age 55 and up. To reach RSVP, call (906) 485-1782.
