It's made possible thanks to a library grant
ESCANABA -- The Escanaba Civic Center officially opened for the season on September 17, and the newest addition is a computer lab that kids can now use for homework. Obtaining the computers was made possible thanks to a grant from the Escanaba Public Library. It’s free to use the lab, since everything for youth at the Civic Center is free, however, parents must stop by the facility and sign a consent form for the kids to be able to use the computer.
The Civic Center is a haven for many students. From 2:30 to 9 p.m., they can socialize, do homework, and play in the game room and basketball court.
Anywhere from 300 to 550 kids register to use the Civic Center every year.
“This is a great place for the kids to come after school, especially if there's nobody at home because both parents are working,” explains Tom Penegor, Civic Center Director. “They can get some exercise and take advantage of the opportunity of being in a nice place, supervised, and enjoying themselves."
Over 70 kids stopped by the center on opening day. Penegor says that number is a record number on the first day of the school season.
