CRYSTAL FALLS -- Forest Park Schools celebrated National School Backpack Awareness Day.
Kids learned to carry backpacks using both straps. Wearing it incorrectly on one shoulder can effect their spine and posture. The day also educated students on how carrying too much weight can lead to pain and strain.
"A backpack should not weigh more than about 10 percent of the child's body weight, so an 80 pound child can carry an 8 pound backpack and preferably not more than that," said orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Gregory Peyer.
Health officials recommended kids carry any extra weight by hand. Parents are also encouraged to purchase backpacks that have padded straps and back lining for more support.
