MARQUETTE -- Over a hundred people took to the streets in Marquette Saturday to raise suicide awareness.

For the past five years volunteers have organized the Out of Darkness Walk in hopes to remove the stigma associated with talking about suicide.

This morning the group raised $6,294 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Some of the people who took part in the walk had battled with suicidal depression and others were survivors of those who took their lives.

"Our team walks in memory of my son Travis who we lost almost 17 years ago," reflected Carroll Ann Swanson, a volunteer and survivor of suicidal loss. "It's our way of making meaning of having lost him and trying to support other people who are struggling with depression."

Also Saturday the United Way of Marquette unveiled a new crisis hot-line text messaging number, 906-356-3337.
