It's the first time the Health Department has put on this event
ESCANABA -- Expectant moms and moms-to-be took part in a community baby shower at the M-TEC in Escanaba. It was sponsored by Public Health, the Mary Creten’s Foundation, and other local businesses.
Jessica Kwarciany was one of the moms who attended. She is due October 4. This time it's a boy.
Even though it's not her first pregnancy, there's still a lot she's hoping to learn.
“I hope to be able to feel more comfortable going into the second birth,” says Kwarciany. “I just hope to learn things like coping with crying and things like that; simple things I can take back home and use for my daughter and my son at the same time."
Health officials provided education for the moms and their new babies. It included teaching them about immunization, the right nutrition, and proper use of car seats.
“It's exciting,” says Debbie Poquette, Director of Nursing at Public Health of Delta and Menominee Counties. “We have car seats, and we hope every mom that needs a car seat is going to go home with one. We’re going to have a car seat inspection, and so if they don't have one, they're going to leave with one. And also every mom is going to leave with a special blanket."
The coordinator for WIC, or Women, Infants, and Children Program, was one of the presenters. She encouraged the moms to sign up for the supplemental nutrition program at the Health Department.
About 23 moms registered for the community baby shower, which was completely free. It was open to moms in the WIC program and moms in the Maternal Infant Health Program.
So how did the moms feel about their baby shower?
“I’m very excited. I was looking forward to doing this for the past couple of weeks now," Kwarciany says.
Officials hope to put on a second baby shower in Menominee in November.
