MARQUETTE -- The Marquette City Commission wants to move forward with the development of what was once the Taystee bread factory in Marquette. The Veridea Group is planning a $31 million development at the site.

The hope is to have a commercial, residential, and retail space on the edge of downtown Marquette. Monday night, the city commission unanimously voted to change the city's zoning ordinance for that property.

"This is the third time it's been before the commission, and I think each time we've been very enthusiastic about it. I certainly am. This is really a very significant project for that area of Marquette, so I'm very much in favor of moving forward," said City Commissioner Don Ryan.

The project will be constructed in four phases, and the goal is to have it completed in 2016. The development will be made up of four buildings and will even have an underground parking garage.

In other business, the city's two new K-9 units, Frodo and Scud, were sworn in as police officers. This brings the total number of K-9 units in Marquette County to four.
