IRON MOUNTAIN -- Financial distress and reductions in revenue sharing may force Iron Mountain and Kingsford to consolidate services. Iron Mountain City Manager Jordan Stanchina says the only way to save money is by reducing labor, and both cities would be able to successfully achieve this through attrition.
“There is going be a number of retirements coming up in the next few years that would help make any reduction in staffing a lot easier to combine,” says Stanchina.
The concept has been discussed for a few years, and these anticipated retirements present both cities a window of opportunity in aiding an easier transition.
“Going from 42 currently between the two departments possibly down to about 35 or 36, total,” explains Kingsford City Manager Tony Edlebeck. “That’s something that we could work with and provide the same services.”
It’s estimated the reductions would save a half a million dollars.
Both city managers say a reduction in labor would not mean a reduction in services. City council members will take time to review and discuss the information before taking any action.
