MARQUETTE -- Northern Initiatives has received $148,000 in grant money to help offer services to small, startup businesses in the Marquette, Michigan area.

The Marquette-based micro lender received the grant from the Small Business Administration. Through its business advancement center, Northern Initiatives will be able to provide free services such as accounting and marketing consultation.

The president of Northern Initiatives, Dennis West, says the goal of the coaching is to get the businesses up and running and on to success.

"Once they start producing financial statements, we'll go in and help them understand what's going on in their business and pick up some cues as to where they may make improvements or what they should be thinking about to improve profitability," added West.

For more information on the loan and what small businesses can do to be considered, check out the Northern Initiatives website.
