MARQUETTE -- A record number of participants at this year's Marquette Marathon made the event a big success.  Seven-hundred-seventy-seven runners took part in the event over the weekend which is up from 477 last year.

Proceeds from the marathon will go to several community organizations including the Marquette Music Department, Blue Print for Health, which battles childhood obesity, and Camp Star.

Race Director, Jeri Mommaerts, says they did a lot better this year.

"This year the weather was fantastic, so it definitely helped everyone's perspective of our race. In Marquette as a whole, we had people who said they were going to stick around for the whole weekend. They weren't planning on it; once they got here, they just loved it. So I can only see this growing," said Mommaerts.

Officials still aren't sure how much money they raised but say it's at least a third higher than last year's total of $10,000.

The Marquette Marathon is scheduled to take place next year on August 31, 2013.
