MARQUETTE -- A new stretch of McClellan Avenue finally opened for traffic on Friday in Marquette.
It was made official with a ribbon cutting from Marquette Mayor John Kivela. The project efforts skyrocketed in the last four years, but it was 41 years in the making according to officials. Mayor Kivela invited as many past mayors and city commissioners from 1971 to present as he could to cut the ribbon with him.
The addition to McClellan Avenue stretches from Fair Avenue to Wright Street. Both intersections now have stoplights.
“We knew several years ago when we had issues with truck traffic that this was a key part of easing congestion in the city, and we made it a priority and here it is today open,” said Kivela.
The entire project cost about $2 million, most of which was funded by the city.
