MARQUETTE -- Northern Michigan University faculty and staff officially kicked off the new academic year with Wednesday afternoon's convocation. NMU President David Haynes spoke before a packed house at Jamrich Hall.

Haynes' speech focused on the success of NMU graduates. He talked about how NMU can rethink, renew, and reconnect. As part of this process, he spoke about reaching out to alumni.

"We have a wonderful alumni program here with some really creative ideas and people that are reaching out to younger alums and older alums like me; part of that is involving alums in mentorships, helping students find jobs, making connections for them," said NMU President David Haynes.

Haynes also plans to focus on enrollment opportunities, including recruiting across the globe. The first day of classes at NMU is Monday, August 27.
