CALUMET -- Nearly 150 mountain bikers pedaled their way to Calumet on Saturday for the 8th annual Great Deer Chase race.

The 26- and 15-mile races help kick-off the city's Heritage Day celebration. Bikers from all over the U.P. and as far away as Colorado came in for the race. Some were as young as eight and as old as 70+ years of age.

Organizers of the event say money from the entry fees goes back to the community.

"It's the way we earn the money to maintain and build the trails out at Swedetown," said Marc Norton, the race director. "And hopefully, we'll be able to build a bike park here in Calumet. The kids, with their BMXs, would like a place with some dirt and things like that. It all takes money, so that's what this is for."
