ALGER COUNTY -- Alger Correctional Facility officials have reported a prisoner stabbing shortly after 3 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.

The unidentified prisoner received a stab wound to his neck and shoulder areas, and was treated by medical staff on the scene. Authorities said he was attacked by another prisoner in the General Population housing unit.

The assailant has been identified and the Alger Correctional Facility has returned to normal operations.

He is expected to recover, but Alger Correctional Facility staff and the Michigan State Police are still investigating.
