MUNISING -- What was supposed to be a fun day at the beach nearly turned tragic this weekend.

On Saturday afternoon, around 2:30, rangers at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Alger County EMS personnel were called out to Miners Beach for a near drowning. They reported that an eight-year-old boy had been playing in three to four foot waves, when he was knocked down and pulled out into Lake Superior.

His father and uncle both swam out to rescue him. The uncle brought the boy back to shore, and then returned to help out his brother, who was struggling in the rough water.

Both men managed to get back to shore. Other beach goers tended them until EMS arrived. The Lake Orion men were released, but rangers would like to remind everyone to continue to use caution on and near the lakes.
