Eighty kids signed up for the first Aileen Fisher Environmental Day Camp

IRON RIVER -- Eighty kids signed up for the first Aileen Fisher Environmental Day Camp. Organizers named the event after a writer and naturalist who grew up in Iron River.

“She saw the beauty in our local environment and that inspired her for the rest of her life to write stories and poetry for children,” says organizer Maggie Scheffer.

The purpose of the day is to teach kids what it means to be a steward of the environment. “In order to care about the earth we need to know about the earth,” Scheffer says.

Kids were shown the difference between renewable and un-renewable energy. They also got the chance to learn about solar power and even baked cookies with a solar powered oven.

Eleven-year-old Colbi Lituri says now she wants to find more ways to recycle things before deciding to just throw them away.
