ISHPEMING -- It is official...after a two-and-a-half year battle with the Michigan High School Athletic Association, Eric Dompierre will be able to play football and basketball this upcoming school year.

The MHSAA notified the Ishpeming School District on Thursday, stating that they approved the waiver request for 19-year-old Eric, who has Down Syndrome. Prior to the waiver, Eric was not allowed to play sports in his senior year because he exceeded the age limit.

Now, schools are able to apply for exceptions for individual students. Eric has spent this past week practicing with the Ishpeming Hematites football team, awaiting the decision.

The first game is for the Hematites is in Iron Mountain on August 24 against the Mountaineers.  Game time is 7:30 p.m. eastern/6:30 central.
