Michigan Tech is now offering a physical therapy program. The program is a partnership between Tech and Central Michigan University.

"The students will do their first summer semester down at Central to get the cadaver experience, and then the rest of their DPT work will be done up here on Michigan Tech's campus," said Jason Carter, Department Chair of Kinesiology and Integrative Physiology.

Twelve students from Tech are a part of this program which will begin in the summer of 2014.

Students will also receive hands-on training from physical therapists.

"In clinical settings, we will be providing clinical education for the students. We'll also have an opportunity to collaborate with the universities for clinical research which is important. In our current day, we need to be focusing on the evidence," said Mark Randell, Director of Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine.

Portage Health, Aspirus Keweenaw, Dickinson County Healthcare System, and War Memorial each donated $25,000 to the new program.

“The entire program is three years. We’ll use a two-way live communication for some of the lab lectures with the Central folk,” Carter said.

Local and regional physical therapists will also help teach students during the lab activities.

Michigan Tech says with physical therapists in demand, this program will give students the opportunity to pursue a joint Doctoral of Physical Science and PhD.
