ESCANABA -- Escanaba Public Safety is investigating a shooting incident that occurred at an apartment complex on the city’s north side Sunday night.

At approximately 10:30 p.m., officers were summoned after a 911 call was placed to Central Dispatch, alerting authorities to a male subject that had just been shot.

Officers located a 20-year-old Escanaba man lying on the floor in the apartment with a gunshot wound to the face.  Rampart ambulance personnel initially transported the victim to OSF St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba and later to Marquette General Hospital for further treatment.

Officers detained 26-year-old Andrew Robert Maynard, suspected of being the one responsible for the shooting. He was brought to Public Safety, interviewed, and ultimately arrested on a weapons offense.

Maynard was in court on Monday morning for his arraignment.

"A felony complaint alleges that on July 29 you did, through carelessness, recklessness, negligence, cause or allow a firearm, specifically a pistol in your possession, to be discharged," said Judge Glenn Pearson at Maynard's arraignment.

Maynard will be back in court for a preliminary examination on August 2 at 9 a.m. He is being held on $2,500 bond. If convicted, he could receive two years in prison and a $2,000 fine.

Public Safety was assisted with the investigation by the Delta County Prosecutor’s Office, Michigan State Police Marquette Laboratory, the Michigan State Police, Delta County Sheriff Department, and Rampart Ambulance.
