ESCANABA -- The U.P. Trappers Convention started at 8 a.m. Friday at the U.P. State Fairgrounds in Escanaba, and there's a special guest to catch.

Les Johnson is the host of Predator Quest Television. It's his first time to visit Michigan, and he was the special guest at the convention. It's the fifth year in a row of holding it in Escanaba, but it's the 50th year the convention has been held. There were about 132 vendors showcasing merchandise like traps, furs, canoes, and hunting gear.

The family event is expected to draw 3,500 people in two days.

"Trapping has been losing interest over the years. It's not a way of life like it was when I was a kid, and I love to help promote that and get families together with all the kids and try to get them involved in the outdoors," said Les Johnson.

It's two dollars for adults to get in and free for kids. Gates will be open from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday.
