MARQUETTE -- The Upper Peninsula Children's Museum is giving youngsters a chance to take on the business world.

The Kid Bizness program works with children to create, develop, market and sell their handmade items. The kids enter into a contract with the museum and receive checks for their profits. The gift shop in the museum displays the items for sale.

"I think the biggest thing they take away is ownership of an idea, so it's their idea," said Jim Edwards, the program director.

"They are young entrepreneurs, and some of them have got hundreds of dollars in profits already made. I think the only limits is the wall space we have downstairs in the store."

In its two years the program has had some huge success. One young entrepreneur received a payout of more than $150. Edwards also said that some of the kids take their profits and donate them to worthy causes.
