MARQUETTE -- Gardeners got some helpful tools to spruce up their U.P. gardens starting with a seminar at Northern Michigan University.
Vendors offered landscaping ornaments, orchids, and different types of flowers that grow well in the U.P. Speakers throughout the day spoke of proper gardening, landscaping and took questions from fellow gardeners. Experts say keeping your garden alive is a two-way street.
"We have an expectation of the plant to do well, to provide color or food or interest, but that plant has a reverse expectation of us and that's making sure it has proper soil, watering, fertilizer," said Mark Dwyer, the keynote speaker.
"They try to talk about plants that are good for our zone and plants that would grow well in our environment," said Emily Lewis, president of the Marquette Beautification Committee.
This is the fifth year the Marquette Beautification Committee has hosted the event.
