SHELTER BAY -- The Alger Hemp Coalition is collecting signatures to repeal marijuana prohibition.

Volunteers from the Alger Hemp Coalition were holding signs and flags along M-28 near Shelter Bay on Saturday. Hundreds of volunteers statewide are working to amend Michigan Constitution Article I that prohibits marijuana. The proposed petition will treat marijuana more like alcohol, still illegal when operating a vehicle, and only allowed for those 21 years of age and older.

The AHC believes ending prohibition will be better for all of Michigan.

"We think it would be a good thing for the economy," said Mike McHaney, president of the coalition. "We think it will help law enforcement free up a lot of the limited resources they need to go after real crime and clean up our streets."

The petition needs the 322,000 signatures by July 9 to be on the November ballot. In order to sign, you must be a registered voter in Michigan. The AHC will be at the same spot Sunday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. collecting more signatures.
