MARQUETTE -- We see them along US-41:  crossovers. But not using them correctly can be dangerous.

A crossover is the section between the highway designated for cars to use when making a turn to the opposite direction. The lane is big enough for semis to use, but people are taking advantage of it. Cars are using it as two lanes and creating potential for an accident. White lines are clearly painted on the road showing that cars cannot double stack.

"Cars are multiple stacking in the crossover; they're causing crashes. Like I said, it's supposed to be the one vehicle that's in the crossover lane," said Trooper Stacey Rasanen of the Michigan State Police.

"They're supposed to get into the left hand lane by signaling that they are going to go in the left hand lane. And then if that vehicle wants to merge over to the right hand lane again, they have to signal and get into the right hand lane."

An officer can pull you over and issue you an infraction for more than $100 if caught not properly using the crossover.
