DELTA CO. -- Delta County's Relay For Life event kicked off Friday at the Marble Athletic Field in Gladstone.

The relay is intended to show that cancer never stops and never sleeps. A total of 26 teams from Delta County are participating. Officials hope to raise about $50,000. So far, they've raised half that amount for cancer research and prevention.

Between 300 and 400 people participated throughout the day.

"You can get luminary bags in honor of someone who has survived cancer or in memory of someone you've lost," said Becky Carey, community representative for the American Cancer Society.

"What we do is we just set them up for now, but this evening we'll have a luminary ceremony. They'll all have candles inside, and we light them and they burn throughout the whole night."

A survivors ceremony was held Friday evening.
