MARQUETTE -- The Michigan State Police Department is giving fair warning to retailers across the state to pull synthetic drugs from their shelves ahead of a new ban.
Manufacturers avoided previous bans by slightly altering the chemical compositions of designer drugs like synthetic marijuana and bath salts. The new ban, which takes effect July 1, closes these loopholes.
State Police say they're giving retailers a chance to comply voluntarily before they start enforcing the law next week.
"Troopers are going to go in conjunction with local officers to the retail establishments after July 1 and an inspection will be done of the premise to determine whether they've removed these chemicals from their shelves and inventory," said Lt. Robert Pernaski of the Michigan State Police.
The law makes it a felony punishable up to seven years for anyone delivering or manufacturing the drugs.
