MARQUETTE -- After months of filming, Encounter is finally premiering. It started as a documentary of 55 people from the U.P. traveling to Madrid, Spain to celebrate their faith with two million others from across the world at World Youth Day.

Co-directors Dustin Katona and Jeffrey Geniesse were part of the enlightening experience.

"Realizing that we have so much in common, yet are so very beautifully and radically different somewhere along the line, we realized we came together for a reason. That's when the encounter happened and the true encounter of finding God in the midst," said Katona.

So they felt the need to tell a story of how, although people are different we are alike, all go through similar struggles in life.

Geniesse says it focuses on the personal struggles of seven different people.

"Take these narrative fictional stories that we have written and put it in the light of the World Youth Day. Try to have World Youth Day the real documentary. The coming together of youth around the world to show people aren't alone in their struggle," said Geniesse.

They shot most of the film in Marquette and cast more than 50 people locally.

The team says they couldn't have done it without the support of the community.

Geniesse says it's costing $47,000 to produce but are so appreciative of the support of many that has funded it.

"Through the Diocese of Marquette, Legacy of Faith Endowment is the organization that was the ultimate financer of the project. Bishop Alex Sample of the Diocese of Marquette is our executive producer. He's the one who ultimately stood up for us and acquired the funding for this project," Geniesse said.

Katona feels no matter the cost of the film, it's the message conveyed that's worth it all.

"The experience I hope they have would be their own one, where they can relate to in their own life. If they haven't had their own encounter, seek it out and to be moved by the images they see 'cause if it's beautiful, than it may lead them to a deeper truth," Katona said.

Encounter premieres at Royal Cinema on June 24 at 1:30 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are welcomed.
