L'ANSE -- Watching Amy Roberts get out of her wheelchair and walk across the finish line is something her family and friends were told may not happen. That's because last December while running in Houghton, Roberts was struck by a car. She received multiple surgeries to reduce the swelling in her brain.

But Roberts is beating the odds and finally returning to something she loves, running.

"This run means family and fun," said Roberts.

There's one word that many people say describes Roberts, “sisu,” and it has followed her throughout her miraculous recovery.

The Finnish word “sisu” means guts and determination, and her friends witnessed that as they ran along side her during the Baraga County Lake Trout Festival Half Marathon, which Amy won first place last June.

"It was really enjoyable because it was a nice, relaxing pace and just talking and laughing with Amy and just a good time with a friend that hasn't been out there in six months, and she's inspirational," said George Eakin, friend of Amy.

She’s a true champion, and this year Amy is keeping her winning attitude by crossing the finish line once again.

As the crowd gathered to watch Roberts reach her goal, the avid runner is grateful for all of the support.

"I think it is a good place with a lot of support and a lot of caring and friendly people here," Roberts said.

Roberts is finally back home with her family and will continue to receive speech therapy and rehabilitation. Roberts says she will run again.

"Oh yeah, I can't wait to run," Roberts said.
