MARQUETTE -- Gas prices are high in Marquette compared to others areas in the U.P., sometimes 15 to 20 cents higher.  In Escanaba Wednesday, $3.55 at the Holiday, $3.59 at Shell.  In Houghton at the BP Station, it's $3.69, Holiday it's $3.59.  The Zephyr Station in Manistique is $3.69, the Holiday has it for $3.68.

After Tuesday night's Marquette Township Board meeting, plans for a new KBIC-owned gas station may create local competition.  The president of the Upper Peninsula Petroleum Association says transportation is a big factor in prices.

"We have higher mortgages, our property taxes are higher, and generally more expensive to do business here.  Another factor is that the nearest terminal is in Green Bay, Wisconsin; since the freight charges are determined by the mile and we're further from Green Bay than other cities, it is more expensive to have it transported here," said UPPA President Brooke Ferns.
