MARQUETTE -- The Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes held their annual awards ceremony at the Marquette Holiday Inn.  TV6 Morning News Anchor, Vicky Crystal offered inspiring words to the young women as keynote speaker.

Although some Girl Scouts could not attend the event, there were a total of 44 girls, aged 11 to 18, that were awarded this year with either the bronze, silver, or gold medals.  Each award requires many hours of community service and hard work.

"It's very gratifying, but I think the greatest part is actually giving back to the community some bit because of what our projects are meant to be," said Gold Award recipient, Mariah Kestila.

"It's very, very nice because all that work, it means a lot to me," said another Gold Award winner, Jessie Dementer.

Mariah Kestila was also one of two of this year's U.P. Girl Scouts scholarships.  The other winner could not attend.
