SANDS TWP -- Opening day is nearly here for racers at Sands Speedway, so it's time for some pre-race practice.

Several drivers raced around the track to test out their cars for the season and get a feel for the track. Racers also worked on some pre-season maintenance for their cars. All race cars need to meet certain rules and standards for their class and be inspected. The quarter mile track was built in 1969 and has added a new feature this year. It now has a seating area that is handicap accessible.

At least 50 racers are expected to arrive for the opening day races.

"This season is looking pretty good," said Stan Wittler, co-owner and track manager.

"We got a lot of new drivers interested. We just have to wait and see how it goes."

Opening day is next Saturday, June 2. Sands Speedway will be open every Saturday until September, but races will be canceled in the event of rain.
