MARQUETTE -- On Monday, law enforcement around the state began enforcing the annual Click It or Ticket campaign in an effort to increase the use of seat belts in Michigan.

Officials from the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post and Chocolay Township kicked off the campaign Monday morning in Marquette with a press conference.

The increase in enforcement comes ahead of the heavily traveled Memorial Holiday weekend and concludes June 3.

"The campaign will run for the next two weeks and over the Memorial Day weekend," said Lt. Bob Pernaski of the Michigan State Police, Negaunee Post. "Last Memorial Day holiday weekend, nine people died in traffic crashes, and three of them were unbelted. It is my hope that by conducting these patrols, we will ensure that everyone has a safe holiday."

Seat belt enforcement zones will be located throughout four U.P. counties:  Marquette, Houghton, Chippewa and Delta.

A citation for not wearing a seat belt is $65.

The effort is paid for by federal traffic safety funds and administered by the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning.
